Students, the time has come–you will be taking your Social Studies benchmark this week (Tuesday to be exact) and I want you to study the handout that was given to you the last class period.  Good Luck!  As for the rest of the week, we will finish up about the region–Imperialism and New Nationalism  and start People and Culture–Tribal Heritage vs. Nation-States.  We will finish up next week and test before you leave for the winter break.  Get ready to show me what you know about Africa South of the Sahara.

Parents, Students and all concerned citizens!

Progress Reports will be sent home on December 1st of this week.

If you have any missing assignments for your teachers, this is the time to get them turned in so that when report cards come out your grade is better than it is at progress report time.

GET YOUR HEAD INTO THE GAME!

Wow!  We made it back from Thanksgiving break and now it is time to get back into learning mode.  This week we will continue learning about Africa South of the Sahara.  We will discuss the history of the region and how scarcity impacted the historical outcome in the region.   Remember! Scarcity is when a resource is limited.  Tell your parents what item was scarce in this region when you find out during our lesson.  I bet they will be shocked to find out what was traded for it.  By the end of the week we will start to learn a little more about the region–colonization of Africa by other countries and the acquisition of independence of the countries.  We also will prepare for the HISD benchmark that will be given next week on campus.  I will give several questions in Do Nows so that you can refresh your memory and be ready.  You also need to devote some time to studying the study guide that I will hand out at the end of the week this weekend.  Get ready to knock that benchmark test out of the water.  You can do it!

It has been a busy last couple of weeks and I have not gotten on to update everyone what we have been doing in class.  Sorry for that and I hope that I am able to keep up from now on.  Now that I have gotten that off of my chest, here is what we will be doing this week.  We have taken the test over North Africa and SW Asia (just a few late testers who need to get their’s done) and now are jumping straight into our next region of study.  We will be learning about Africa South of the Sahara.  Of course, we will use the acronym SHAPE once again with the region.  This week we will be focusing on the S of SHAPE.  The S stands for setting and that is where we learn about the geography of the region such as the landforms, bodies of water, countries, and all the physical aspects of our region. We will look at the vegetation, population density, and climate of the region while studying setting.  Get ready to absorb all you can about Africa South of the Sahara.  Make sure to enjoy the rest of the week for Thanksgiving! Happy Thanksgiving to all! :)

This week we will be completing our history of the region which includes information about Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt along with about the region which includes talking about the resources that are abundant and scarce in the region.  JA will also visit us this week to discuss productivity.

Some students need to get their missing assignments into me and make up any failing grades as soon as possible.  This six weeks is slowly come to an end and I sure would hate to see you get a failing report card grade.  Get that work in!

Monday (unfortunately I was out sick) but, we’ve been working on more Multiplying Decimals practice, remember we don’t K.I.L.U. when we multiply, but ignore the decimals until later!

Yesterday and today we’ve been talking about giving our whole numbers a BUTT when we divide with remainders.  As usual, if you need any help–come and see me before it’s too late!

Happy (almost) Halloween! :)

Monday’s classes will finish up the first lesson about  setting for our new region (North Africa and SW Asia).  Remember we will use the acronym SHAPE for all our regions that we will study for the rest of the year.

SHAPE stands for:

  • Setting
  • History
  • About the region
  • People and Culture
  • Events Today

We will finish up the History of the region this week as well.
